First pile casing pitched – another milestone for the Wellington Ferry Project
15 September 2026
CentrePort reached a significant milestone for the Ferry Infrastructure Project last week, with the first permanent pile casing being lowered into position.
The project team went down to Dock Wharf to observe and celebrate this critical point in the project, and were in good spirits last Thursday despite the wet weather.
The first pile casing marks a big step forward for the extension of Dock Wharf, which is required to accommodate the new, larger Interislander Ferries arriving from 2029.
The first 24m-long pile was installed using a 160-ton crawler crane from a staging wharf at Kaiwharawhara. The next piles will be installed from a different spot using a jack up barge.
More than 50 permanent piles are required across the project, along with other temporary piles put in place for the various staging wharves the construction team have created. We’re using the southern end of the port (know as South Road) to weld the pile casings together to the desired 24m length, and these temporary wharves support the team to transport piles and other materials between South Road and Kaiwharawhara Point.
Noise Management
To get the pile casings at the correct depth, the project team will be using a piling hammer. This means locals may notice some noise and vibration. To manage potential disturbances, we’ll only be piling during daytime working hours.
We’re working with specialist acoustic consultants to monitor and manage the noise. Measures will be put in place to dampen the noise for the surrounding community and people working in the area. Our care extends to marine mammals that could be disturbed by the underwater vibration.
To keep the community informed, we’ll provide further updates about our piling progress and any changes to our piling programme.
The full piling programme is expected to be completed in early 2028.
If you have a question about the piling or how we are managing potential disruption, please get in touch with us.
