Progress on piling and temporary terminal works

8 October 2026

Making an impact

You may have heard sounds resounding from the Wellington Ferry Infrastructure project. If you have, it’s the impact hammer at work driving pile casings into the ground for foundations needed for things like the ferry wharf extension.

The sound is considerably lighter than it could have been thanks to a special noise dampening shroud placed around the machinery. When we measured the sound, we were pleased to find the hammer is making less noise than predicted. It's worth noting that noise levels can vary depending on where someone is comparative to the piling and the weather conditions, so be prepared for it to seem louder or softer on occasion.

Temporary Terminal Building

Work on the temporary terminal building is also moving forward with early works underway for underground services. The temporary terminal is an important part of the wider project and designed to maintain a safe separation between construction activities and terminal users, including passengers, vehicles and operational areas.

The temporary terminal has been designed to meet Wellington City Council regulatory requirements and Interislander's operational requirements.

The changeover to the temporary terminal building is due to happen early next year and remain in place until near the end of the project.

For anyone wondering, the title of the building says it all – the structure is temporary. Once the project work is complete and operations have returned to the existing terminal, the temporary structure will be removed and the site reinstated as part of the overall project. We’ve been given consent based on this expectation.

As construction progresses, there will be some adjustments to traffic management and access arrangements around the site. These changes are necessary to maintain safety for Interislander users, construction workers, and the wider public. Updated information will be provided ahead of key changes.
